Presenting INSIGNIA in Italy

The Italian beekeeper’s magazine APINSIEME recently published an article about the INSIGNIA project. Italy is one of the partners of the INSIGNIA consortium that covers 12 European countries.

The official Italian registry records for 2019:

  • 57’131 beekeepers
  • 122’416 apiaries
  • 1’283’727 colonies.

63% of beekeepers are hobbyist (they produce honey and other products only for they self-consumption) while the 80% of colonies are managed by beekeepers that produce for the market.

Plants biodiversity is a crucial characteristic of Italy and it is reflected in the high diversity of honeys (more than 50 monofloral honeys) and pollens harvested for human consumption.
